Active Reading

During my time in high school, active reading was one of my weaknesses. The school tells you to not write in the books and to answer comprehension questions about the text. However, for the first weeks of class I feel like I have evolved more as an active reader. One of the first assignments that was given to me was to annotate the text Emerging. My feelings towards highlighting in the book? HORRIFIC! It felt like I had commited a sin. Although I struggled to be comfortable with annotating, I feel like I have improved. Currently, I am now able to highlight and write in the margins. Throughout the year, I hope to be able to ask questions/challenge the text about anything that seems skeptical to me and ask some rhetorical questions as well. Regardless of how bad I am with active reading, I believe that I will be able to improve active reading and make it one of my strengths.

I was the same way before I came here; I wasn’t sure how to do any form of active reading. It’s funny how all of us were so scared to annotate the physical books and now we’re marking every page with highlighters and pens. Hopefully we will become even better active readers with the amount of practice we will do in this course.
